Best Mattress Toppers UK 2026: Cost Per Year, Trials and Returns Compared
A topper can buy a tired mattress a few more years, but the price tag only tells half the story. We divided each double-size price by a realistic lifespan, then read the trial and returns terms, because a topper you cannot send back is a gamble.

The short answer
The Simba Hybrid Topper is the one to buy if you can stretch to £349. Its springs keep it supportive for longer, and the 200-night trial with free collection means you carry almost no risk. On a tighter budget, the Panda Bamboo Topper costs £139.95 and works out at about £35 a year.

How we did the sums
How we worked out the cost per year
We did not sleep on these toppers for this guide. We compared published specs for the UK double size (135 x 190cm), checked prices on each retailer's own site on 9 and 10 October 2026, and read the full trial, returns and guarantee terms. We then pooled owner reviews from the brand sites, Amazon and M&S, and read hands-on tests from The Guardian, The Telegraph, The Independent, Expert Reviews and Ideal Home.
A topper has no running costs, so the useful number is what it costs for each year it stays comfortable. We set an expected lifespan for each one from its construction. Independent guides put most foam toppers at three to five years, cheap fibre toppers at around two, and spring hybrids at the upper end. Cost per year is simply the double price divided by that lifespan.
Here is the sum for our top pick: £349 ÷ 6 years = £58.17 a year. For the Panda Bamboo Topper: £139.95 ÷ 4 years = £34.99 a year. For the Silentnight Airmax 1000: £38 ÷ 2 years = £19 a year. The lifespans are our estimates, not maker promises, so we show them on every pick and you can redo the sum with your own figure.
A long guarantee is not the same as a long life. The 10-year guarantees from Simba, Panda and Emma cover manufacturing faults and, in Panda's case, the topper staying intact and supportive. They do not promise it will feel new in year eight, which is why our lifespans are shorter than the guarantees.
- Double-size price checked on the seller's own site, 9 to 10 October 2026
- Expected lifespan set by construction: spring hybrid, foam or hollowfibre
- Cost per year = price ÷ expected lifespan, shown on every pick
- Trial length, who pays for returns and whether used toppers can go back
- Guarantee length and what it actually covers
- Owner ratings and review counts from brand sites, Amazon and M&S
- Independent hands-on tests from named UK publications

9.1/10Simba Hybrid Topper
A thin mattress in its own right, with micro springs under the foam, a 200-night trial and free collection if you change your mind.

Price checked: Simba, 10 October 2026. Sold via simbasleep.com.
In its favour
- Springs add lift, so it should stay supportive longer than plain foam
- 200-night trial with free collection, the longest here by far
- Rated 4.8 out of 5 from 4,521 reviews on Simba's site
- Named best overall by The Guardian and The Independent
Against it
- £349 is close to the price of a budget mattress
- Testers noticed an off-gassing smell for a day or two
- Only 6.5cm deep, so it will not rescue a sagging mattress
Simba's topper is built like a small hybrid mattress. Under a soft cover sits a layer of Simbatex foam, then up to 1,900 conical Aerocoil springs (Simba quotes 2,500 on the double), then a foam base. The springs are what you are paying for. They push back as you move, which stops the sinking feeling you can get with plain memory foam.
The reviews agree. The Guardian and The Independent both named it their best topper overall, and The Independent's tester said it changed an old bed for sleepers in their 60s as well as for her. The English Home found it kept an attic room bed cooler. The one repeated complaint is a smell for the first day or two after unboxing, which is common with vacuum-packed foam.
On cost, it is the second-dearest pick at £349, but we give it the longest life here at six years because the springs take load off the foam. That makes it £58.17 a year. The bigger saving is the trial. If it does not suit you within 200 nights, Simba collects it free and refunds the price, so the worst case is a few weeks of bother rather than £349 lost.
Buy it if
You want the most comfortable upgrade for a firm but flat mattress and would like six months to be sure.

8.8/10Panda Bamboo Mattress Topper
Proper memory foam with a washable bamboo cover and a 10-year guarantee for well under half the price of the hybrids.

- Cost per year of use

Price checked: Panda, 10 October 2026. Sold via pandalondon.com.
In its favour
- £139.95 for a double with a 10-year guarantee
- Adjustable corner straps and an anti-slip base keep it in place
- Rated 4.81 out of 5 from 8,977 reviews on Panda's site
- The Guardian found it the best of its test for warm nights
Against it
- The 30-night trial only applies if you buy from Panda directly
- Plain foam has the slow memory-foam hug some people dislike
- Only 5cm deep
Panda's topper is a 5cm slab of its HydroFoam memory foam with a zip-off bamboo-blend cover. It has elastic straps on each corner and a silicone-dot base, which matters more than it sounds. Owner reviews of cheaper foam toppers often complain about them sliding off the bed, and Panda's rarely do.
The Guardian's reviewer named it the best cooling topper in her summer test, then wrote a longer review in July 2026 saying it would not actively cool you but did help her sleep through a heatwave. The Independent picked it as its best memory foam topper. Both mention how much softer it made a firm mattress.
We give it four years of good use, the upper half of the usual range for foam, because of its density and the 10-year guarantee. That gives £34.99 a year, the best figure of any foam topper here. Buy it from Panda rather than a marketplace if you want the 30-night trial. Amazon sells it too, but the standard 30-day Amazon return only covers unused items.

8.5/10Emma Original Pro Topper

Price checked: Emma, 10 October 2026. Sold via emma-sleep.co.uk.
In its favour
- 9cm of foam is the most cushioning in this guide
- 100-night trial with free delivery and free returns
- Anti-slip underside
- The Telegraph's Best Buy topper
Against it
- £73.80 a year is the highest figure here
- At full price it costs more than the Simba hybrid
- Rated on fewer reviews: 4.6 from 183 on Emma's site
Emma's Pro topper stacks a graphite-infused ThermoSync foam layer on top of a firmer HRX support foam, for a total of 9cm. That depth lets heavier sleepers and side sleepers sink in at the shoulder and hip without hitting the mattress below. The Telegraph's tester said it took decades off a soft, sagging spare bed.
The catch is the price. At £369 for a double, even after a £40 cut, it sits above the Simba. We expect five years from it, a little less than the Simba because it has no springs to share the load. That gives £73.80 a year, the most expensive running figure in this guide.
Emma's terms are good. You get 100 nights to try it, free delivery and free returns through its online portal, and a guarantee of up to 10 years. Emma also runs frequent sales, so if it is near £300 when you look, the yearly cost drops to about £60 and it becomes a closer call with the Simba.

8.4/10Panda Hybrid Bamboo Mattress Topper
Springs under bamboo-infused foam make it a real rival to the Simba, but the trial is only 30 nights.

- Cost per year of use

In its favour
- Up to 2,100 micro springs under the foam
- 7.5cm deep with a ventilated mesh border
- Five stars and a Best Buy from Expert Reviews
- Slightly cheaper per year than the Simba
Against it
- 30-night trial against Simba's 200 nights
- Few owner reviews so far: 4.81 from 37 on Panda's site
- Memory foam top still gives a slow hug
Panda launched its hybrid in early 2026 to take on the Simba directly. It puts a layer of bamboo-infused BioCell open-cell foam over up to 2,100 micro springs and a memory foam base, wrapped in a mesh border to let air through. At 7.5cm it is a little deeper than the Simba.
Expert Reviews gave it five stars and a Best Buy in February 2026, praising the mix of comfort and support and its temperature control. Ideal Home's tester, who has tested toppers for four years, said it gave the Simba a run for its money. Both flagged the price and said firm-support fans may find the memory foam too soft.
On our sums it is very close to the Simba: £339.95 over six years is £56.66 a year. What separates them is the risk. Panda gives you 30 nights to decide, Simba gives you 200. For £9 more, we would take the Simba's longer trial. If the Panda is on offer, it becomes the better buy.

8.0/10Emma Original Topper

In its favour
- Two sides of different firmness, so you can flip it
- 100-night trial with free returns
- Rated 4.6 out of 5 from 118 reviews on Emma's site
Against it
- £54.75 a year, well above the Panda Bamboo
- No springs and no cooling layer
- Fewer independent tests than the others
Emma's entry topper uses two foams, Airgocell and HRX, arranged so one face is softer and the other firmer. If you are not sure whether you want more give or more support, you can sleep on one side for a few weeks and turn it over. It is 6cm deep, so a touch deeper than the Panda Bamboo.
It costs £219 for a double, and we expect around four years from it, the same as the Panda. That works out at £54.75 a year, which is £20 a year more than the Panda for a topper without a bamboo cover or a cooling foam. What you are paying for is mostly the trial.
That trial is worth something. Emma gives you 100 nights with free returns, more than three times Panda's 30. If you have bought a topper before and got the firmness wrong, the flip-over design plus 100 nights is the lowest-risk way to try again.

In its favour
- Lowest cost per year here at £19
- The whole topper goes in the washing machine
- Mesh sides let air through, so it sleeps cool
- Rated 4.5 out of 5 from 276 reviews at M&S
Against it
- Fibre flattens far faster than foam
- Adds softness, not support
- Cannot be returned once opened unless faulty
The Airmax 1000 is a soft, 10cm quilt filled with hollowfibre, with breathable mesh sides and elastic corner straps. It is the budget pick in both The Guardian's and The Telegraph's topper guides. It makes a bed feel softer and more padded, a bit like a thick mattress protector, but it does nothing to support you.
Fibre fillings compact with use, so we give it two years before it feels flat. Even so, £38 over two years is £19 a year, the lowest figure in this guide. Its other money point is cleaning. You can wash the whole thing rather than just a cover, which saves buying a separate protector to keep it fresh.
Be careful with returns. Silentnight only takes back unopened bedding, and you pay the postage. Dunelm and most high-street stores have the same hygiene rule for toppers. So treat this as a cheap, low-risk buy rather than one you can try and send back.

What we looked at and left out
- Silentnight Impress Memory Foam Topper (5cm)Silentnight's own site only listed king and super king when we checked, and Amazon had no main seller for the double.
- Dunelm Memory Foam Mattress TopperGood reviews and £110 for a double, but only a two-year guarantee and no trial. Opened toppers cannot be returned unless faulty.
- Eve Mattress TopperWe could not confirm a current double price on Eve's own site, so we could not cost it fairly. Older listings put it around £269.
- IKEA TUSSÖYIKEA sells its memory foam toppers in European sizes such as 140 x 200cm, which do not fit a UK double neatly.
- Simba Hybrid Topper, refurbishedCheaper at £209 for a double, but the trial drops to 30 nights and the guarantee to one year.
Before you buy
Check your mattress before you buy a topper
A topper changes how the surface feels. It does not fix the structure underneath. If your mattress has a dip you can see, or you roll towards the middle, a topper will sink into that dip and you will still wake up sore. Emma says the same in its own buying advice.
Lay a broom handle across the mattress. If you can fit more than a couple of fingers under it in the middle, the money is better spent on a new mattress. If the mattress is flat but too firm, too hot or just tired on top, a topper is a sensible fix.
Why cost per year beats the price tag
A £38 fibre topper and a £349 hybrid are not doing the same job, and they do not last the same time. Dividing the price by a realistic lifespan puts them on the same scale. The spread is narrower than the prices suggest: £19 a year at the cheap end, £74 at the top.
Our lifespans are estimates. If you sleep on one side of the bed, are heavier, or have pets on the bed, foam wears faster. Rotating a topper end to end every few months spreads the wear.
- Hollowfibre: about 2 years
- Memory foam: 3 to 5 years
- Foam over micro springs: 5 to 7 years
Trials and returns: read them before the product page
Most high-street shops will not take back a used topper. Dunelm's returns policy lists mattress toppers among the items it cannot refund unless they come back unused and in the original packaging. Silentnight's rule is the same for bedding. A topper takes a couple of weeks to get used to, so a no-trial purchase is a guess.
The online brands sell on their trials. Simba gives 200 nights with free collection. Emma gives 100 nights with free returns. Panda gives 30 nights, but only when you buy from Panda directly. Note which retailer you buy from, because a Panda bought on Amazon falls under Amazon's normal returns instead.
Depth and material: what each one is for
Thin foam (5 to 6cm) softens a firm mattress. Deep foam (9cm) suits side sleepers and heavier people who need to sink in at the shoulder. Spring hybrids add bounce and stop the trapped, sunk-in feel some people get with memory foam.
Fibre toppers add softness only. They are cheap and washable, and they suit guest beds, but they will not ease aching hips.
Sleeping hot on foam
Memory foam holds heat. Open-cell foams, gel infusions and springs all help air move, but none of them will cool you down. The Guardian's reviewer said exactly that of the Panda: it helped her sleep in a heatwave without actively cooling her. If you run hot, a breathable cover and cotton bedding make as much difference as the topper.
Questions readers ask
How long does a mattress topper last?
Most foam toppers last three to five years. Cheap fibre toppers flatten in about two. Toppers with micro springs under the foam tend to last longest, and we budget five to seven years for them.
Is a mattress topper worth it, or should I buy a new mattress?
A topper is worth it if your mattress is flat but too firm, too hot or worn on the surface. If it sags in the middle, a topper will sink into the dip and the problem stays. Spend the money on a mattress instead.
Can I return a mattress topper after sleeping on it?
Only if the seller offers a trial. Simba (200 nights), Emma (100 nights) and Panda (30 nights, bought direct) take back used toppers. Most high-street shops, including Dunelm and Silentnight, only accept unopened toppers unless faulty.
What depth of topper should I get?
5 to 6cm is enough to soften a firm mattress for most people. Side sleepers and heavier sleepers often prefer 7 to 9cm so the shoulder and hip can sink in further.
Will a memory foam topper make me too hot?
It can. Memory foam traps more heat than fibre or springs. Open-cell foam, gel infusions, mesh borders and spring layers help, but none of them actively cools you. Pair any foam topper with breathable bedding.
Does a 10-year guarantee mean it lasts 10 years?
No. Guarantees cover manufacturing faults and, in some cases, the topper staying intact. They do not promise it will feel as comfortable in year ten as on night one. That is why our lifespans are shorter than the guarantees.
How do I stop a topper sliding around?
Pick one with corner straps and a non-slip base, as all six here have one or both. A fitted sheet pulled over both the topper and mattress also helps hold it in place.
