Best Carry-On Luggage 2026: Warranties and Cost per Trip Compared
Six carry-on suitcases sold in the US, ranked on what they cost you over five years of flying. We read every warranty, checked each bag against the 22 x 14 x 9 inch sizer used by American, Delta and United, and worked out a cost per trip.

The short answer
The Travelpro Platinum Elite Carry-On Spinner is the best carry-on for most people who fly often. It costs $390, holds 46 liters, and its warranty pays for airline damage once you register it, which works out to about $13 a trip over five years. If you want the strongest warranty money can buy, the Briggs & Riley Baseline Essential 22 covers airline damage for life with no registration, but it costs $729.

How we did the sums
How we compared them
We did not fly with these bags for this guide. We compared the published specs on each maker's own product page, read each warranty in full, and pooled owner ratings where a retailer shows them. Where independent testers have measured or flown these bags, we cite them by name, mainly OutdoorGearLab and Wirecutter.
For fit, we compared each bag's overall size, wheels and handles included, with the 22 x 14 x 9 inch limit that American, Delta, United, JetBlue and Alaska all publish. A bag that is over on paper is not always turned away at the gate, but it is the bag that gets measured first.
For cost, we assumed six one-way flights with the bag every year, or 30 trips over five years. The 5-year cost is the street price we found plus a $60 repair allowance for any bag whose warranty does not pay for airline damage in those five years. The $60 is our assumption for one paid wheel or handle repair at an independent luggage shop. It is not a quote.
The sum is simple. Cost over 5 years = price + repair allowance (if any). Cost per trip = cost over 5 years / 30. For example, the Monos Carry-On Pro: $251 + $60 = $311, and $311 / 30 = $10.37 a trip.

In its favour
- Airline damage repairs covered once you register
- 46 liters plus 2 inches of expansion
- Top softside pick at both OutdoorGearLab and Wirecutter
- 4.5 stars from about 4,600 Amazon ratings on the 21-inch listing
Against it
- 23.5 inches tall with wheels, over the 22-inch figure on paper
- Heavier than the hard-shell bags here
- Airline cover needs registration within 120 days
The Platinum Elite has been OutdoorGearLab's top carry-on recommendation for years, and Wirecutter names it its top pick too. OutdoorGearLab measured 40 liters in the main compartment before expansion, which they say held a week of clothes. Travelpro lists 46 liters for the whole bag.
The warranty is what makes the numbers work. Travelpro's Built for a Lifetime limited warranty covers wheels, zippers and handles against defects. Its Trusted Companion Promise adds repair of airline damage and covers shipping to a repair center, but only if you register the bag within 120 days of purchase. Travelpro says the length of that promise varies by collection, so read the terms for your bag when you register.
The catch is size. The case is 21 x 14 x 9 inches, but wheels and handles take it to 23.5 inches tall. Travelpro says it has been tested in the sizers and bins of the major US airlines. That is the maker's claim. On paper it is over the limit, so on a strict gate agent's day it is the bag most likely to be measured.

You fly several times a year, often pack a jacket or work clothes, and will register the bag the day it arrives.

8.9/10Briggs & Riley Baseline Essential 22" Carry-On
The most expensive bag here, and the only one whose lifetime guarantee covers airline damage with no registration and no proof of purchase.

- $729
- Warranty
- Lifetime, airline damage included, no proof of purchase
- Repair allowance
- $0 (airline damage covered)
- Cost over 5 years

Price checked: Briggs & Riley, 9 October 2026. Sold via briggs-riley.com.
In its favour
- Lifetime repairs for any functional damage, airline damage included
- Fits 22 x 14 x 9 exactly when compressed
- CX expansion adds 2.5 inches of depth, then cranks back down
- Flat interior with built-in garment support
Against it
- $729 is nearly twice the Travelpro
- 10 lb empty, the heaviest bag here
- Cosmetic wear is not covered
Briggs & Riley says on its product page that if the bag is ever damaged, even by an airline, it will repair it for life, free of charge, with no proof of purchase needed. No other bag in this guide offers that without registration or a paid add-on. That makes it the one bag here where we can say the five-year cost really is the price on the tag.
It is also one of only two bags here listed at the common US size. Briggs & Riley gives 22 x 14 x 9 inches with the bag compressed. The CX system pushes the depth to 11.5 inches for the trip home, but expanded it no longer fits the sizer, so compress it before you fly.
The weight is the real cost. At 10 lb empty it leaves less room under a strict cabin weight limit than the 6.5 to 7.8 lb bags here. Spread over 30 trips it costs $24.30 a trip, the most in this guide. Kept for ten or fifteen years, which is what the guarantee is built for, that figure falls a long way.

Price checked: Away, 9 October 2026. Sold via awaytravel.com.
In its favour
- Free repairs for 5 years, rough travel included
- Repairs in Away stores and round-trip shipping paid by Away
- 7.1 lb with a built-in TSA combination lock
- OutdoorGearLab's favorite hard-shell carry-on
Against it
- Warranty changed in April 2026: after five years repairs carry a fee
- Does not expand
- A fraction of an inch over 22 x 14 x 9 on width
Away rewrote its warranty for bags bought on or after April 14, 2026. The new LifetimeCare cover gives free repairs for five years for damage from manufacturing defects or unexpected rough travel, and up to one replacement if a repair is not possible. After five years, repairs remain available for a service fee. Bags bought before that date keep the old limited lifetime warranty.
For our five-year sum that is good news, since every covered repair in that window is free. It is less good if you planned to keep the bag for fifteen years on a free warranty. Away does not publish the later service fee, so we cannot put a number on years six onward.
OutdoorGearLab measured 35.5 liters in the main compartment and called the Away a durable bag that performs above its price. At the $220 sale price we found, it is the cheapest bag here per trip apart from the Samsonite, and it has far better cover than the Samsonite in the first five years.

Price checked: Monos, 9 October 2026. Sold via monos.com.
In its favour
- Front pocket fits a 16-inch laptop without opening the case
- Listed at exactly 22 x 14 x 9 inches
- 4.8 stars on Monos's own product page
- 100-day trial on unused bags
Against it
- Airline damage needs a paid Lifetime Warranty+ plan
- OutdoorGearLab measured just 29.8 L for clothes
- Does not expand
The Carry-On Pro is the only hard shell here that Monos lists at exactly the common US size, wheels and handles included. If you fly carriers that check bags in the sizer, that matters more than a few liters.
The space is the trade. Monos lists 36 liters, but OutdoorGearLab measured 29.8 liters in the main compartment because the laptop pocket takes room from the inside. They found it best for two-to-four-day trips.
The included limited lifetime warranty covers manufacturing defects. Airline damage, cracks and functional impacts are covered only under the optional Lifetime Warranty+ plans, which also add a lost-luggage credit. Because the standard cover leaves airline damage to you, we added our $60 repair allowance. If you buy the plan instead, add its price to the five-year cost.

- Lifetime on manufacturing faults
- Repair allowance

- Cost over 5 years

In its favour
- 42 liters in a 7.5 lb case
- Ejectable USB-C battery included
- YKK zippers and a lifetime guarantee on the wheels
- 100-day returns and free US shipping
Against it
- 15.16 inches wide, over the 14-inch limit on paper
- Warranty covers manufacturing faults, not airline damage
- Costs more than the Away for similar cover
July's standard Carry On is a polycarbonate case with reinforced bumpers, YKK zippers and its SilentMove wheels. July lists 42 liters and 7.5 lb, which is more room than the Away or Monos for a similar weight.
The size is the problem for US flyers. July lists the case at 21.65 inches tall, 15.16 inches wide and 8.46 inches deep. Height and depth are fine, but the width is more than an inch over the 14-inch figure that American, Delta and United publish.
July's lifetime warranty covers manufacturing faults. It does not say it covers airline damage, so we added the $60 allowance. That puts its five-year cost $135 above the Away, which has free rough-travel repairs for the same five years.

In its favour
- Lowest cost per trip in this guide
- 6.5 lb, the lightest bag here
- Expands by 1 inch
- 4.3 stars from more than 19,000 Amazon ratings
Against it
- 23 x 15 x 10 inches is over 22 x 14 x 9 on every side
- Amazon owners report scratches and dents easily
- Zipper and handle complaints in owner reviews
On cost per trip the Freeform wins, even after our $60 repair allowance. It is light at 6.5 lb, it expands by an inch, and Samsonite backs it with a 10-year limited warranty against manufacturing defects.
Size is the catch. Samsonite lists it at 23 x 15 x 10 inches overall. That is over the 22 x 14 x 9 limit on every side. Southwest allows 24 x 16 x 10, so it fits there. On American, Delta or United it may pass a casual look, but it will not fit the sizer.
Owner reviews are mixed on wear. On Amazon it holds 4.3 stars from more than 19,000 ratings. Amazon's own summary of those reviews says scratch resistance and zipper durability draw more complaints than praise. On Samsonite's own site it rates 3.8 out of 5.

What we looked at and left out
- Travelpro Maxlite 5 21" SpinnerLighter at 5.4 lb and cheaper, but also over the 22-inch height on paper, and the Platinum Elite is the better long-term buy.
- Rimowa Original CabinCosts several times more than anything here and its warranty covers manufacturing defects, not airline damage.
- Away The Bigger Carry-OnMore room, but Away sizes it for most US airlines rather than the 22 x 14 x 9 sizer, so we kept the smaller model.
- July Carry On Light ExpandableOnly 4.9 lb, but July lists it at 9.65 inches deep before expansion, over the 9-inch limit.
- Calpak Ambeur Carry-OnWe could not confirm its current overall size with wheels and its US warranty terms from Calpak when we checked.
Before you buy
Read the warranty before the spec sheet
Most carry-ons fail in the same places: a wheel, a handle, a zipper, or a crack from a baggage cart. Whether the maker pays for that repair decides your real cost.
The word lifetime means very different things in this guide. Check two things. Does it cover airline damage, and do you need to register or pay to get that cover?
- Briggs & Riley: lifetime, airline damage included, no registration
- Travelpro: lifetime limited, airline damage once registered within 120 days
- Away: free repairs for 5 years including rough travel, then paid
- Monos: lifetime on defects, airline damage only with a paid plan
- July and Samsonite: manufacturing faults only
Measure with the wheels and handles
Airlines measure the whole bag. Many makers lead with the case size, which leaves out the wheels and handle. Travelpro publishes both: a 21-inch case that is 23.5 inches tall overall.
American, Delta, United, JetBlue and Alaska all publish 22 x 14 x 9 inches. Southwest allows 24 x 16 x 10. Regional jets have smaller bins, so expect to gate-check on those whatever you buy.
Work out your cost per trip
Divide what the bag will cost you by the trips you will take with it. A $729 bag used 30 times costs $24.30 a trip. Used 100 times over fifteen years, it costs $7.29.
If you fly less than twice a year, a cheap bag with a 10-year warranty is hard to beat. If you fly monthly, airline-damage cover is worth paying for, because you are more likely to need it.
Softside or hard shell
Softside bags like the Travelpro and Briggs & Riley expand, have outside pockets, and give a little when you squeeze them into a bin. Hard shells like the Away and Monos protect fragile things better and wipe clean, but they cannot be overstuffed.
If you often bring more home than you took, a softside bag with expansion will save you a checked-bag fee or two.
Register the bag the day it arrives
Travelpro's airline-damage promise only starts if you register within 120 days. Keep the receipt or order email for every brand, even where the maker says proof is not needed. It takes five minutes and can save the full price of a repair.
Questions readers ask
What is the carry-on size limit on US airlines?
American, Delta, United, JetBlue and Alaska all publish 22 x 14 x 9 inches, including wheels and handles. Southwest allows 24 x 16 x 10 inches. Always check your airline before you fly, as regional aircraft can have smaller bins.
Which carry-on has the best warranty?
The Briggs & Riley Baseline. Its lifetime guarantee covers functional damage, airline damage included, at no charge and with no proof of purchase. Cosmetic wear is not covered.
Does Away still have a lifetime warranty?
For suitcases bought on or after April 14, 2026, Away's LifetimeCare gives free repairs for five years, including damage from rough travel, and up to one replacement if a repair is not possible. After that, repairs are available for a service fee. Bags bought before that date keep the old limited lifetime warranty.
Does the Travelpro Platinum Elite fit in the sizer?
On paper it is 23.5 inches tall with wheels and handles, which is over the 22-inch limit. Travelpro says it is tested to fit the sizers and bins of major US airlines. If you fly carriers that enforce sizes strictly, Travelpro sells a shorter International Carry-On.
Is a $700 carry-on worth it?
Only if you fly often and keep it for many years. Over 30 trips the Briggs & Riley costs $24.30 a trip against $7.33 for the Away. Over 100 trips the gap closes to about $7.29 against $2.20, and the Briggs & Riley still has airline-damage cover then.
Are hard-shell carry-ons more durable?
Not always. Polycarbonate shells like Away and Monos resist cracking well, but they scuff and cannot expand. Ballistic nylon softside bags like Travelpro and Briggs & Riley resist abrasion and are easier to repair.
Do I need to register my suitcase for the warranty?
For Travelpro's airline-damage cover, yes, within 120 days. Briggs & Riley says no proof of purchase is needed. For other brands, keep your order confirmation so you can prove the purchase date.
